I miss London at Christmas. Theses live webcams from Trafalgar Square , Covent Garden and Big Ben are bringing back such good memories! Somehow shopping in my local Target isn’t quite the same.
LOL

Do they celebrate it as a religious holiday though? I have read that Europe, including and maybe especially England, has gotten really secular….only a small percentage (I think I’ve read less than half?) go to church anymore. Just wondering if you see mangers and hear “Merry christmas” over there or if it has gotten to be a ‘holiday’ like some are trying to make it here.
Excellent point jandosmom. I was just going to say how much I like Christmas in NY, but it’s just a holiday feeling thing.
That looks lovely. I so want to go to England and Scotland to visit. As for secularism…I think it is everywhere and spreading rampantly unfortunately.
I’m SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!

Not any more or less then we do here in America.
All of our friends though were through the Church so we were surrounded by friends that were going through the period before Christmas that we call the Nativity Fast and actually observing it. England is not as politically correct, YET, they did just legalize gay marriage so to speak, as America. You still hear Christmas carols with Christ in them at Christmas and shop clerks that wish you a “Happy Christmas”. There are Christmas carolers (the salvation army) on the high streets like Oxford and Kensington and places like Harrods. London is very diverse though with lots of Muslims, Jews and Hindus. But all in all they recognize themselves as a Christian country , I believe . I think though that 2% of Anglicans actually go to Church every Sunday though. You don’t see all the holiday Christmas “stuff” in peoples front lawns. Orthodox Churches are FULL on Christmas day and Easter is amazing! The streets around the Orthodox Churches are closed for the procession on Good Friday. All in all the older people that attended our parish (which served an area that was populated with 40,000 Greek Orthodox) tended to be more pious because they came from Orthodox Christian countries before immigrating to England. All in all though secularism is EVERYWHERE even in the Holy Land. Sad but true. There are however very devout Christians to be found even in the most secular of European countries.
Hi, Its me again, I can’t believe I’m actually posting another comment, I could get used to this. For those who haven’t guessed, its Chrysa, From LONDON!!! I saw your comments about London and thought I’d take the chance to reply.
Well, firstly Lisa, I continue to amaze me with your web links! I thought I was good but you are much better!!!!!!
Anyway, over here we have issues with Christmas etc but the majority of people let others know that they are celebrating the Nativity even if they aren’t. So, if we are in a shop and we actually know the person serving us doesn’t celebrate Christmas, we still wish them a “Merry Christmas” and 9 times out of 10 they say it back!
You can’t beat Covent Garden on a Saturday afternoon in December. We took the children there last Saturday to buy little pressies for each other. The street entertainers are amazing. Everyone is in the Christmas mood, especially with the smell of Chestnuts Roasting on a coal stand.!
Hi chrysa i miss you and can’t wait for you all to get here. aren’t those cameras cool ! I nursing the baby and typing with one hand so sorry about this sloppy post.:spinning:
I really love that webcams now exist all over the world and can give any of us a glimpse into what’s going on elsewhere. Thanks for some new links to check out! =)
