Quote for the Week:  For Holy Communion, the confession of our sins to a father confessor is needed; whereas for our communication with God, the confession of our weaknesses before Him is necessary.  Elder Paisios

Scripture for the Week:  “Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the Church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.”  Ephesians 3:1-12

    Question for the Week:
How do you feel when you consider that we, who are ”less than the least of God’s people”, are entrusted with the sharing of the Gospel message to the people around us?

Thought for the Week:  ‘Chip, Chip, Chip Away!’
Time seems to slip like sand through our fingers. It feels like there’s never enough of it to do what we most enjoy in life. Not that we mind cooking, cleaning, shopping, chauffeuring, or working outside the home, but these works bring a temporary satisfaction until the next meal, the next load of laundry, the next paycheck, etc. We want to get to other ventures, but few are the days when we are awarded with enough time to start and finish something like framing precious photos, planting seedlings for our garden or inputting addresses for next year’s Christmas cards. There has to be a way, and there is! But it is not necessarily the way WE want it. How many times have we started something we really want to do, only to have meals, laundry, and straightening thrown to the wind? This is NOT the way. We need to take small bites in order to accomplish our goals. It doesn’t take long before a dripping faucet fills up the bucket, and we all know the tortoise’s victory. We just need his PERSEVERENCE. So we have to think differently. An ‘all or nothing attitude’ earns us nothing but frustration. Imagine a mother duck with her ducklings, patiently bringing them along, down the way, across the pond, hither and thither. She doesn’t lose one very often. We are like that mother duck, and the ducklings represent all that our life embodies: wife, mother, worker, artist, musician, hobbyist, whatever makes you uniquely YOU. You must learn to ‘bring along’ all these responsibilities and interests in a way that doesn’t compromise your family or your particular gifts and interests. Sure, there are seasons when you will do well to provide the basics then fall into bed from a job well done. But it won’t be long until you’re itching to paint, or plant, or create. The key is, ‘Chip, Chip, Chip Away!’ Five minutes here, a half hour there, but never at the expense of your cherished relationships. In this way, we can use our God-given talents and interests to enrich our home life, our families, and our communities.

“Slow and steady wins the race”

“Lord, grant us patience. And please do it quickly! Amen.”

  • If you could all keep praying, I would really appreciate it. God is really testing me and I pray I passed the test. You see, I am very squeamish. Ever since my illness, several years ago, I internalize everyone’s pain and it makes me terribly sad and sick to my stomach. I didn’t use to have such a weak stomach, but now I find it hard to clean up after people.  Basil has been suffering all through the night and still this morning, he is miserable, as is Fr.- last night and still this morning both of them are so nauseous and dizzy. Nicholas, Jonah and Maria~Angelica are through the worst of it (I hope, because we thought Basil had been through all this last week and he was now better) but poor Fr. and Basil are still suffering- if you can, please remember them in your prayers today.

BUT MUCH MORE importantly please, please keep praying for baby Vivian. Thank you to the dear, thoughtful friend, of Kristen and Peter’s who is was so kind to send me this link to the webpage set up for baby Vivian so we can follow her progress and continue to pray for her and her parents. I can’t imagine what they are going through. I was so HAPPY to see  Kristen’s smiling face!!! Baby Vivian is so BEAUTIFUL with  a full head of dark hair.  Please keep praying for this precious young couple and their little girl!

    Prayers for a Sick Person

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, Who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal also Your servant (name) from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant him (her) patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health. Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed. I pray, heal Your servant (name) and grant to him (her) the gift of complete health. For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Lord our God, Who by a word alone did heal all diseases, Who did cure the kinswoman of Peter, You Who chastise with pity and heal according to Your goodness; Who are able to put aside every sickness and infirmity, do You Yourself, the same Lord, grant aid to Your servant (name) and cure him (her) of every sickness of which he (she) is grieved; and send down upon him (her) Your great mercy, and if it be Your will, give to him (her) health and a complete recovery; for You are the Physician of our souls and bodies, and to You do we send up Glory: to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Both now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

  • Warning- this post is not for those with a weak stomach.

Thanks guys, for your prayers and concern.. This morning I have the worst sore throat I can ever remember- I am so glad we all went to the Dr. yesterday and got antibiotics. Only 4 of us have managed to take them though.  Last night, was so not pretty.  RIGHT after I posted, Maria~Angelica was sick in her crib all over her pretty handmade knit blankets etc…She was terrified! She had never thrown up before and didn’t know what was happening. This went on for several hours- along with Nicholas being sick,  miserable and feverish. Jonah had bounced back a little so he wanted all my attention to entertain him- it makes for a less peaceful cuddle in bed, when everyone is NOT equally lethargic. Basil was very helpful, thank goodness, because Fr. was at a parish council meeting and there was a lot for just one person to take care of.  Basil helped me do several loads of laundry and ran for whatever I asked of him, more towels, wet wipes, fresh clothes- Maria~Angelica was only interested in being sick right into the crook of my arm- I went through several nightgowns- but funny enough and this is gross- be warned- even her throw up smelled sweet and then I figured out it was because she had eaten a cinnamon roll that afternoon.  Once Fr. came home he got Jonah settled, Basil went off to bed, Nicholas fell asleep in our bed for the night and Maria~Angelica  and I watched the same episode, over and over again,  on Kids on Demand, of *Yo Gabba Gabba- the most inane show for children- but she loves it and in a very strange way- it is growing on me. Once everyone was asleep we did have a peaceful night and everyone is still sleeping now. It has finally caught up with Fr. and he won’t be able to go to his meeting in Detroit today. I know he is disappointed about that- but want can you do- even priests get sick….

*I could make an entire post about Yo Gabba Gabba – there must be an inside joke with the writers of this show and a college audience under the influence of illegal substances that must really enjoy it.  Be sure and check out Elijah Woods- Frodo- doing his dancey-dance….

  • “That’s Life”

    6 office visit co-pays : $150

Walgreen’s run for 6 antibiotics, 6 new toothbrushes, plenty of  liquids and  ice cream : $170

Cuddling in a king size bed with 4 children, thanking God that we have health insurance, it’s only strep throat x6 and that this too shall pass” : priceless

  • ~Wonderful news! God is Answering our Prayers!~

Thank you to, a friend, who posted this news on the comments of my blog entry asking for prayers for Vivian Anastasia.

    Good news!

Kristen is healing well and is expected to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow.

The doctors seem very pleased with the progress Vivian is making. Immediately after birth, Vivian was responding only to very intensive ventilator assistance. Since then, the doctors have been gradually lowering the ventilator settings. Last night they even thought she might not need the ventilator anymore, and they let Vivian breathe on her own for about 1 and 1/2 hours before they put her back on a very low ventilator setting–her lungs are still not strong enough to do all the work on their own.

Touching Vivian is still discouraged at this point, though Kristen was allowed to lift Vivian up and even to change a couple of diapers. Vivian is expected to be moved to a new room in a brand new Intensive Care wing, where she will have her own room (with a bed for Kristen, too). They expect the hospital stay to be in the 6-8 week range, if all goes well.

Peter asked us to pray for Kristen especially as they transition to several weeks of life in a hospital room. He also said they would be glad to hear from folks through cards and/or notes.

  • ~Long Night Ahead?~

A bit before midnight I had just finished laying out all the Church clothes and a half an hour later, Jonah wakes and is calling for me…..he’s just been sick….so much for Church tomorrow. Basil got hit on Tuesday night- that sure was a long incubation period. I do hope Nicholas and Maria~Angelica don’t get it too and Fr. and I for that matter. It was very odd tonight that Jonah didn’t want to eat dinner. Nicholas even asked my to make dinner which is unusual for him- he’s not a big eater but when it came time to eat it he wasn’t interested. We had a late dinner because Fr. had a baptism and then an emergency hospital visit so I had the time to make two pitas- spinach and cheese, a roast chicken, rice and salad- all of which was met with an underwhelming response…now we know why. So, I am laundering Jonah’s sheets and comforter and wondering  just how deeply I should fall asleep. If it is anything like what Basil had, it is going to be a long night.

  • ~On February 2 the Orthodox Church commemorates the Presentation of Christ to the Temple (Luke 2:22-40)~

    presentation

The (Presentation) Meeting of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Temple

Today the Church commemorates an important event in the earthly life of our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 2:22-40). Forty days after His birth the God-Infant was taken to the Jerusalem Temple, the center of the nation’s religious life. According to the Law of Moses (Lev. 12:2-8), a woman who gave birth to a male child was forbidden to enter the Temple of God for forty days. At the end of this time the mother came to the Temple with the child, to offer a young lamb or pigeon to the Lord as a purification sacrifice. The Most Holy Virgin, the Mother of God, had no need of purification, since she had given birth to the Source of purity and sanctity without defilement. However, she humbly fulfilled the requirements of the Law.

At this time the righteous Elder Simeon (February 3) was living in Jerusalem. It had been revealed to him that he would not die until he should behold the promised Messiah. By inspiration from above, St Simeon went to the Temple at the very moment when the Most Holy Theotokos and St Joseph had brought the Infant Jesus to fulfill the Law.

The God-Receiver Simeon took the divine Child in his arms, and giving thanks to God, he spoke the words repeated by the Church each evening at Vespers: “Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel” (Luke 2:29-32). St Simeon said to the Most Holy Virgin: “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be spoken against. Yea, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (Luke 2:34-35).

At the Temple was the 84-year-old widow Anna the Prophetess, daughter of Phanuel (February 3), “who did not leave the temple, but served God with fasting and prayers night and day. She arrived just when St Simeon met the diving Child. She also gave thanks to the Lord and spoke of Him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem” (Luke 2:37-38). In the icon of the Feast she holds a scroll which reads: “This Child has established Heaven and earth.”

Before Christ was born, righteous men and women lived by faith in the promised Messiah, and awaited His coming. The Righteous Simeon and the Prophetess Anna, the last righteous people of the Old Testament, were deemed worthy to meet the Savior in the Temple.

The Feast of the Meeting of the Lord is among the most ancient feasts of the Christian Church. We have sermons on the Feast by the holy bishops Methodius of Patara (+ 312), Cyril of Jerusalem (+ 360), Gregory the Theologian (+ 389), Amphilocius of Iconium (+ 394), Gregory of Nyssa (+ 400), and John Chrysostom (+ 407). Despite its early origin, this Feast was not celebrated so splendidly until the sixth century.

In 528, during the reign of Justinian, an earthquake killed many people in Antioch. Other misfortunes followed this one. In 541 a terrible plague broke out in Constantinople, carrying off several thousand people each day. During this time of widespread suffering, a solemn prayer service (Litia) for deliverence from evils was celebrated on the Feast of the Meeting of the Lord, and the plague ceased. In thanksgiving to God, the Church established a more solemn celebration of this Feast.

Church hymnographers have adorned this Feast with their hymns: St Andrew of Crete in the seventh century; St Cosmas Bishop of Maium, St John of Damascus, and St Germanus Patriarch of Constantinople in the eighth century; and St Joseph, Archbishop of Thessalonica in the ninth century.

On this day we also commemorate the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos known as “the Softening of Evil Hearts” or “Simeon’s Prophecy.” The Mother of God is depicted without Her Child, with seven swords piercing her breast: three from the left side, three from the right, and one from below.

A similar icon, “Of the Seven Swords” (August 13) shows three swords on the left side and four from the right.

The icon “Simeon’s Prophecy” symbolizes the fulfillment of the prophecy of the righteous Elder Simeon: “a sword shall pierce through your own soul” (Luke 2:35).

  • ~Please Pray for Baby Vivian Anastasia~

A friend of ours, a very dear young lady, who was a teacher at Mars Hill Academy- where our children use to go to school in Cincinnati-  was due March 23 (Western Easter Day) but last night she underwent an emergency C-section, giving birth to a 2lb baby girl named Vivian Anastasia.  Apparently the umbilical cord had been wrapped around Vivian’s neck for some time and the placenta was not functioning correctly.  As a result, Vivian is alive but on a respirator and might not live for very long.  Developmentally, her head is the appropriate size but her body is about a month behind size wise and there is a possibility of internal problems as well.  As you have the opportunity, please pray that the Lord would heal Vivian and send His Spirit to comfort and encourage her parents Peter and Kristen in our Savior. Kristen and Peter are newlyweds, they were married last summer.  I am so upset to learn of this news with their sweet baby girl and what a lovely name they have given her. We live in the hope of Christ’s resurrection (Anastasi) and through Him all things are possible.  Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, please heal Vivian Anastasia and comfort her parents Peter and Kristen.

  • Quote for the Week:  ”Has a brother been the occasion of some trial for you and has your resentment led you to hatred?  Do not let yourself be overcome by this hatred, but conquer it with love.  You will succeed in this by praying to God sincerely for your brother and by accepting his apology; or else by conciliating him with an apology yourself, by regarding yourself as responsible for the trial and by patiently waiting until the cloud has passed.”  St. Maximos the Confessor

Scripture for the Week:  ”Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God–truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians  4:23-24

Question for the week:  Is there someone who has “been the occasion of some trial” for me?  Has my resentment led to hatred?  (Am I even willing
to admit that hatred in one of its various forms – jealousy, annoyance, etc.- might actually be there?!)  Am I willing to lay an axe to the root of this
weed and earnestly pray for this person and allowing God’s love to supplant my own reactions?

Thought for the Week:  On Cynicism
If you would like to quickly destroy your soul, there is a simple way: through the toxin of cynicism. Cynicism is to a human person what poison is to a rodent, the bait is irresistible but deadly. Here’s how it works: Rather than look to your own soul and thus your own sins, glance sideways and look to your neighbor instead. Poke fun, be crass, tear down…  see not Christ, but a sinner. But only do so if you want to erase all good fruit from your life.
We are susceptible to cynicism because we seek perfection and project that onto those around us. As well, our physical eyes look outward, and we easily notice the sins of others if we are not practicing vigilance. But the Lord tells us to see with the eyes of our souls…to look to Him and to look within ourselves, and only when we have removed the log from our own eye are we to aid our neighbor in removing the speck from theirs. Only in this way can we protect ourselves from cynicism, this self-delusion and road to utter destruction. Bend your neck, repent of all gossip, sarcasm and cynicism and find Christ in your neighbor. Thus, we will become friends of the Lord.
