  • We had a wonderful day yesterday. I hope to post pictures soon.  Liturgy was wonderful today too. I am on a real high after our day at the monastery. I sooooo needed that!!!

    ~Jonahisms~

In other news, Jonah is a trip.

A couple days ago Jonah , the baby and I were sitting together in the back seat of my brother’s car while my brother was driving. Jonah was real quite and snuggling up to me (which never happens because I am either driving or sitting up front). He must of been thinking hard to himself because he asked me, in an ever so reflective voice, “Mom why did God make all the bad people true?” Translation - why does God allow bad people to exist. This was a great teaching moment about God giving us free will.

Twenty minutes into our 2.5 hour trip yesterday, Jonah asked.

    “How much more minutes?”

Then today after Church some friends of ours went to the Natural History Museum. Jonah informed them not to take dogs to the museum because dogs like bones. LOL!

  • Earlier today Jonah announced , “I love school.”

Then tonight while he was hugging me goodnight he said, “I don’t know why, but I really love school.”

In the morning we are going , as a church group, for a pilgrimage to St. Gregory Palamas Monastery. Pray for our safe travels!

  • ~Lunch #2~

Me , photographing the children’s lunches, had Fr.  wondering ( and imagine this in a Greek accent), “Are you going to take pictures of their lunches everyday?” LOL!

Basil’s very grown up third grade class, getting right down to business! The first grade teacher and the third grade teacher are sisters. The are the most loving , jovial and wise teachers I have ever met! I am so grateful that our children are in such loving, caring and capable hands of these precious Christian ladies!

And of course you didn’t think I could end a post without a nice picture of  little Maria~Angelica on the BIG day! We can’t leave her out.  (Ashlee, that’s for you!)

  • ~Three little lunches, for three little boys. ~

I was inspired by Vegan Lunch Box.  I enjoyed reading her blog all last school year and the boys were really excited to get their Laptop Lunches, bento ware lunch boxes. I am looking forward to making lunches this year. Jonah only needs a snack, for half day kindergarten , but he can surely eat a whole meal! Jonah never says no to a meal , even if it is not offered to him. Jonah saddles right up to you and says, “mmmmm, that looks good. Whatcha eaten’?”  Nicholas on the other…. well he is not the best eater and last year barely touched his kindergarten snack. So this is the first year I have two full time little students. I hope the boys like the their lunches. If nothing else at least their lunches are organized and healthy, which I enjoy! We are all excited for the new school year in the BRAND NEW school! I can’t wait to see them all in their uniforms in the morning!

  • ~Maria~Angelica turned 10 months old today~

She is really a lot of fun and full of tricks. She claps her hands, says hi, dances, tries to sing, responds to her name being called, waves hello and goodbye  and is beginning to walk.  She has four little teeth now, she smiles a lot and giggles a lot too. Her brothers can’t get enough of her and she is showered daily with lots of hugs and kisses. And thanks be to God, she is very, very healthy!

To the Friends, Supporters and Loved Ones of Lynette:

Dear friends, supporters and loved ones:

Lynette’s condition has worsened significantly in the last few days.  Please click on the link below as Nathan writes about Lynette’s current situation and the quickly approaching end of her life here on earth:    (We added two new pictures of Lynette at the girls camp as of 8-19-06):

    ** Nathan’s Update to Lynette’s Albanian Diary, 8/18/06**

    Lynette's August Newsletter:

    August 18th, 2006, From Nathan

(New Pictures at the bottom of page)

Lynette has begun to slip away from us.  A few weeks ago when we learned that the cancer had begun in her liver we believed that it was at an early stage and that we would still have some time together.  Since then, things have progressed very rapidly.  10 days ago a scan showed that cancer had completely taken over her liver and caused her liver to expand to fill most of her abdomen.  Since then, she has begun to show signs of liver failure with these becoming acute in the last 48 hours.  She is extremely tired, sleeping throughout the night and most of the day.  She has begun to lose her motor skills; things like drinking out of a glass have become very difficult.  She has spilled her water on herself many times in the last two days.  It is becoming difficult for her to think and speak clearly.  The doctors say that her time is now very short.  Those who are planning to come and visit are accelerating their travel arrangements in hopes of arriving while she can still communicate.

We returned from the girl’s summer camp yesterday.  The evening before we left Lynette gathered her strength and mental faculties to spend about one hour speaking to the girls about the end-of-life and preparation to meet our Lord.  This was a beautiful time in which the work which God has done in Lynette shown out so clearly.  Death is almost never talked about here in Albania and terminally ill people are not told that they are dying so we pray that Lynette’s testimony will help these young women to prepare for a Christian end to their lives.

We continue to be so grateful for the companionship of each one of you on this difficult journey.  We have been so wonderfully sustained by you in so many ways.  I asked your prayers especially for these last days and hours which we have with Lynette.  Though we have known it was coming for a long time, the end has come suddenly and there are still many things which we would like to finish.  Please pray that she will have at least a few hours of strength and clear thought and that we will use these moments well.  Also pray that those who are coming to visit will arrive in time.

Pray for the children and I, and that we will have a sustaining sense of His presence.  My eyes are full of tears as I write but I also have a strong sense of joy.  The jewel which I have been privileged to hold a short time is slipping away from me, but I know that she will be held in far more worthy arms until we are reunited.  I am so blessed in these days by her joy and her faith and her love.  She is truly an icon of Christ to me which is sustaining me.

  • ~Many Years! Xronia Poula!~

Today is  Maria~Angelica’s name day.  Fr. told me, in Greece, the children who are named for the Mother of God celebrate on the Feast day of the Entrance of the Theotokos  (since the Mother of God was a child when she was presented at the temple) and that the older people celebrate today, Panagias. We started our day by going to the Divine Liturgy and recieving Holy Communion. Today is a national holiday in Greece and we will call my MIL to wish her a happy name day.  Today all those people named Maria, Panagyiota or Panagyioti (Pete in English, for some reason) celebrate today.

May God grant Many years to all those that celebrate their name days today! Happy Feast Day to all!

Holy Theotokos pray to God for us!

    The Dormition of the Theotokos

    Celebrated on August 15

The Feast of the Dormition or FallingAsleep of the Theotokos commemorates the death, resurrection, and glorification of Christ’s mother. To help us in our preparation of the feast, it is preceded by a two week fast. As with the Nativity of the Virgin (September 8) and the feast of her Entrance to the Temple (November 21)the Feast of the Dormition also comes from the Tradition of the Church.

There we learn that Mary died as all people die because she had a mortal human nature affected by the corruption of this world. The Church proclaims that Mary needed to be saved by Christ just as all of us are saved from trials, sufferings, and death of this world. Having truly died, she was raised by her Son as the “Mother of Life” and already participates in the eternal life of paradise which is prepared and promised to all who “hear the word of God and keep it.” (Luke 11:27-28) Finally, we celebrate the fact that what happens to Mary happens to all who imitate her holy life of humility, obedience and love.

It is important to remember that there are no relics of the Theotokos. Their existence has never been mentioned throughout history. At one time in Constantinople there was a center of pilgrimage where the belt and veil of the Virgin were venerated.

Adapted from The Orthodox Church, Volume II: Worship, by Fr. Thomas Hopko.

From the Tradition of the Church

Following the day of Pentecost, the Theotokos remained in the city of Jerusalem, comforting the infant Christian community. She was living in the house of the beloved Apostle John, later the Evangelist. At the time of her death (tradition states she was in her early fifties) many of the Apostles were scattered throughout the world preaching the Gospel. All but Thomas were miraculously brought to the Virgin aloft on clouds.

As they stood around her bedside, she commended her spirit to the Lord and Jesus descended from Heaven, taking up her soul in His arms. The Apostles sang the funeral hymns in her honor and carried her body to a tomb in Cedron near Gethsemane. When a Jewish man tried to interrupt their solemn procession, an angel of the Lord came and punished him by cutting off his hands, which were later healed.

The Apostle Thomas arrived on the third day and wished to see the Virgin for the last time. They discovered an empty tomb. Church tradition relates that the Theotokos was resurrected bodily and taken to heaven, the same reward that awaits all the righteous on the Last Day.

    About the Icon

The Theotokos is depicted upon the funeral bier.

Christ, standing behind the Theotokos, is her Son, Who has come to receive His Mother’s soul into heaven; He holds in His left arm an infant in white, symbolizing the soul of the Theotokos reborn in her glory in heaven; Christ also is robed in white and appears in an aureole (elongated halo) depicting the Light of His Divinity.

The Apostles are depicted on either side of the bier stand the Apostles; the group on the left is led by St. Peter who stands at the head of the bier; the group on the right is led by St. Paul who stands at the foot of the bier.

Below the bier is a figure of Antonius the Jew, who tried to disrupt the procession, was punished, but later repented of his sins and embraced Christianity through Baptism.

Taken from The Icon Book, by Boojamra, Essey, McLuckie & Matusiak.

    Troparion (Tone 1)

In giving birth, you preserved your virginity!
In falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos!
You were translated to life, O Mother of Life,
And by your prayers you deliver our souls from death!

    Kontakion (Tone 2)

Neither the tomb, nor death, could hold the Theotokos,
Who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions.
For being the Mother of Life,
She was translated to life by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb!

    Terminology

    Theotokos “God-bearer”, “Mother of God”
    Aiparthenos “ever-virgin”
    Panagia “all holy”
    Dormition “passage through death”
    Assumption “ascension into heaven”

The name “Theotokos” was made official by the III Ecumenical Council (Ephesus, 431 AD) which decreed that the Virgin should be honored by this name which confirms the Orthodox belief in the Incarnation: that Christ was both true God and true man. As so often happened in those days, this action was a response to heretical teachings that needed to be addressed. Thus, once and for all, the Church affirmed her teachings about Christ and Mary.

    Some Things To DO

Come celebrate the Feast Day in Church as a family, if not on the day itself due to work, then at least on the eve of the feast at Vespers if offered in your parish.
Use the section above to explain the significance of the Feast to your children.
Use the Troparion and Kontakion hymns as prayers before and/or after meals, and as part of the children’s evening prayers during the 8-day “afterfeast.”
If you have an icon of this feast, display it in your family’s place of prayer for veneration. [Your parish bulletin might have the icon on it.] Discuss the icon with your children so that they are able to recognize all the figures and be able to tell the story.
It is the custom in some parishes to bless flowers on this Feast. Have your children pick and prepare a bouquet of flowers to bring to the Church to be blessed. Use the flowers to decorate an icon or the family table. Make an extra bouquet for someone who cannot come to Church.
